Creators can now get paid via Bitcoin Twitter tips

Users on Twitter will now be able to tip their favorite creators on the social platform using Bitcoin. On Thursday, the social network giant announced that it would roll out its Tips feature globally to all Apple iOS users this week and do the same for Android users in the coming weeks.

The incorporation of Twitter's tip feature with Bitcoin is not surprising since CEO Jack Dorsey is one of the strongest supporters of crypto.

On Thursday, Twitter disclosed that it will now enable users to tip their favorite creators on the platform using Bitcoin.

The company launched the tipping feature back in May to assess how it can assist creators in earning remuneration from their followers for the content they post on the network. The social media network announced Thursday that it would roll out its Tips feature globally to all Apple iOS users this week. Android users will access the service in the coming weeks.

Earlier, users used to tip using fiat currency through more conventional payment services like PayPal's Venmo and Square's Cash app. Twitter will incorporate the Strike Bitcoin lightning wallet service to allow creators to receive Bitcoin tips. The firm will also enable users to connect their Bitcoin addresses to send and receive crypto tips.

Also, Twitter does not take a commission of any money sent through the Tips feature.

The incorporation of Bitcoin to Twitter's tip feature is not surprising given that CEO Jack Dorsey is one of the diehard supporters of crypto.

Dorsey has tweeted sometime back that he was interested in joining Bitcoin mining. Dorsey stated that he was convinced Bitcoin was the most important thing that he could work on, adding that he had hoped the crypto would bring about world peace.

Besides, Twitter announced it is also testing with a feature that would let users validate and demonstrate their cluster of NFT virtual assets on the social platform. The firm did not disclose much detail or any particulars concerning this blockchain project. However, the company said the project is another alternative to support creators who create digital art.

Apart from blockchain, the social network also disclosed its plans to roll out a creator fund for users who host Spaces audio rooms as a form of incentivizing more live audio events. In 2020, Twitter launched Spaces, a feature that allows users to hear and chat with others in exclusively audio virtual rooms. The firm anticipates the yet-to-be-launched fund will incentivize more users to host live audio events on the platform.

Twitter for iOS Beta prepares for Bitcoin tips

Twitter's current beta update comes with support for supplying Bitcoin tips to content creators that utilize the Tip Jar feature launched by the platform earlier this year. Even though Bitcoin isn't available as a tip alternative for beta users, the code in beta proposes Twitter is in the middle of launching it.

When twitter's Tip Jar was first rolled out, Twitter enabled users to add Patreon, Cash app, Bandcamp, Venmo, and PayPal links to their Twitter profile. However, the platform will introduce a Bitcoin option soon.

The introduction of a Bitcoin tip alternative comes following Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey's statement to investors in July that BTC was critical to the firm and would feature in the tip jar from now on.

“If the Internet has a native currency, a global currency, we are able to move so much faster with products such as Super Follows, Commerce, Subscription, Tip Jar, and we can reach every single person on the planet because of that instead of going down on market-by-market approach.”

I think it’s hugely important to Twitter and Twitter shareholders that we continue to look at the space and invest aggressively in it.”

– CEO, Twitter

Information concerning the latest Twitter beta demonstrates that users will be directed through a Bitcoin tutorial that features details concerning Bitcoin wallets and the Bitcoin Lightning Network to custody and not controls.

Twitter gives Strike, Wallet of Satoshi, and Blue Wallet as examples of depots, while it provides Breeze, Muun, Zap, and Phoenix as examples of wallets that are not in custody. Additionally, Twitter advises users that they need to have a Strike account.

According to Twitter, the company uses Strike to process Bitcoin Lightning invoices to ensure users can connect their accounts to accept Bitcoin tips.

The platform is also in the process of working on "Haha," "Cheer," "Like," "Hmm," and "Sader" reactions to Tweets to ensure that users can activate with an action of pressing and holding the "Like" button.

Currently, Bitcoin support for tips is limited to the Twitter beta and is still unavailable for each beta user. As such, it is still not clear when the Bitcoin feature will be launched officially. Twitter has also not indicated when the new reactions will be introduced.

Ethereum & Bitcoin addresses coming to Twitter tips.

Twitter is currently working on allowing users to add their Ethereum and Bitcoin addresses to their profiles to get cryptocurrency tips. Twitter is likely to use the addition to enhance the Tip Jar feature it launched earlier this year.

Twitter is making developments to allow users to receive tips on Bitcoin using the Tip Jar.

In July, CEO Jack Dorsey termed Bitcoin a "big part" of its future in discussion with analysts and investors, proposing its implementation.

Alessandro Paluzzi, a mobile app developer, has discovered references concerning the San Francisco-based firm introducing the feature and shared a tweet with screenshots showcasing the new options.

The first screenshot indicates that Twitter would allow users to copy the Bitcoin and Ethereum addresses to send tips through Tip Jar. The second and third screenshots show the ability to add Ethereum and Bitcoin addresses to user profiles.

Paluzzi also shared a screenshot on his Twitter handle showing how the Tip Jar feature will support Bitcoin.

Kayvon Beykpour, product lead at Twitter, also seemed to disclose the development by responding to the tweet using a lightning bolt emoji and accompanied by a comment saying "soon."

However, Beykpour did not provide further details about when the feature would be launched. Still, Paluzzi's screenshot indicates that the tech giant would prefer The Lightning Network payment transfer technology to enable tips on Bitcoin.

The tech giant introduced the Tip Jar feature in May to enable creators, journalists, and non-profits the chance to monetize their tweets as crypto tips. Initially, Twitter allowed users to connect their Bandcamp, Cash App, Patreon, Paypal, and Venmo accounts to access tips from their followers. Twitter is likely to add cryptocurrencies as a new payment alternative.

Dorsey has long supported cryptocurrencies. For instance, he stated in August that Bitcoin is likely to unite a deeply polarized United States.

Bitcoin will unite a deeply divided country. and eventually: world ~ jack⚡️

During the company's earnings call in July, the CEO explained how he anticipates Bitcoin becoming an essential part of Twitter. He stated that there's a lot of innovation beyond the currency, especially concerning decentralizing social media.
